I purchased my
first Great Dane in Dec. 1966 as a Christmas gift to myself. I had
planned to buy a show Bloodhound until I found out they just
wouldn't fit the bill. My best friend at that time had just
purchased a "Boston" Great Dane (now known as a Mantle)
and there was one puppy left, a merle. I bought her, brought her
home, and named her Tara (the T in Talico). Her registered name was
Tara Rah Ra Boom Tee Ay. The name fit, she was a merle Marmaduke and
the sweetest, most loving animal I had ever encountered. Dawn, my
second daughter, was thirteen months at the time and learned to walk
by holding this 14 week old puppy's collar. Tara was so cautious
with Dawn that sometimes she would just stand and let the baby get
her bearings, then take slow deliberate steps to lead this little
one in walking. This alone started a love affair with Great Danes
that is still going on nearly 43 years later.. It wasn't long before
I decided I wanted to show and after numerous phone calls located
Hildy Compton (of Hildydane fame) she co-owned a show Harlequin puppy that we
named Angelique of Hildydane (the A in Talico) I had a great time
with Angel and was "hooked" on showing while we won
numerous classes and had some very thrilling times, Angel
never finished her championship. I had made several friends in the
Dane world among whom were the Smagas. They called me one night at
about 11:00 PM because they had taken in a 6 month old brindle
female that was from some excellent California breeding ( I later
bought a fawn bitch from Jecamo Kennels because of this puppy).
Lindy (the L in Talico) was lovely, and stayed with me for about 8
months. Her original owners decided that they wanted her back and
bought her from me. T-A-L-I-C-O means Tara, Angel & Lindy in
company. Over the years I have raised 45 Great Danes and have had
more than 30 litters, but those three remain my
